Having just celebrated their 17th Birthday in serious out and out raving stylee, it’s no secret that Rinse have been deeply ingrained in the underground music culture here in the UK from day dot. RWD have had their back since those early days too, we’ve lost count of the amount of Rinse DJ’s and artists that we’ve covered over the years.

Now riding the airwaves legally and boasting the likes of Mercury Nominated Katy B on their record label roster Rinse are continuing to push the best of the underground from the worlds of dubstep and grime to house and D&B. A massive salute from RWD!!!

Fellow pioneers of the underground music scene Deja Vu were such a poignant figure in the emergence of what is now known as grime music. You may have already picked up on the stature of the legendary pirate radio station through the #DECA10 virals which we filmed in and around the station but for those who don’t know, the clashing culture pretty much started and ended on Deja Vu.

It was about more than chart hits back then, there were no short cuts to stardom, it was all about gaining that respect from your peers via the mic and Deja provided that platform. Look out for the #DECA pirate radio virals hitting the site soon but for now Deja Vu we salute you!

RWD contributors Sean Conway and James Carnegie talk to DECA about first coming across RWD all those years ago. Since then they’ve gone on to shoot the likes of Wiley (the result of which covers DECA), Kano, Chipmunk, Mistajam and even royalty, yes real life royalty, these are the type of circles RWD roll in…

 ”Sean and I saw the mag back in 2005 I think? We picked up the phone and went down to see the creative guru that is Dacre clutching our portfolio of heavy metal bands and live funky upstarts on stage. He must have seen something he liked because over the next six years we found ourselves shooting artists in ice cream parlours, mixing studios, council estates, back alleys and pi$$ stained lifts! All in pursuit of that elusive cover-grabbing shot (we scored twice I think)! Anyways, although it didn’t make us rich, often involved waiting hours for the artist to turn up and then you discover you’re shooting them in a broom cupboard; we like to think it honed our skills and shooting under pressure in awkward environments and how to make something out of nothing. It’s this that’s helped propel us both off in differing directions and whilst we may not be so involved in the UK grime scene as we once (reluctantly) were, we’ll never forget those heady RWD days.  Happy 10th birthday RWD – go big. You deserve it for still being here and dominating the scene.”

It’s just about knowing that your stuff is good and believing in yourself” Terror tells RWD when questioned on the secret of After Shock’s success, “putting it out and seeing what it does. We’re just looking to cater for the roads, but if it goes charts that’s a bonus. We’re just looking to see how far we’re going to get.” It’s early days for the label, which is still under a year old, but they seem to have already got pretty far. With dubs like Shola Ama & D Double E’s ‘So Contagious’, Sadie & Kano’s ‘So Sure’, Bruza’s ‘Bruzin’ and 2 Nice’s ‘How We Roll’ heating roads right now, nothing but hot beats seem to be rolling off the press and the production line is showing no signs of slowing down, with more material in the pipeline from Shizzle, Hyper (N.A.S.T.Y.) Shirona, DJ Dubplate Shox, 2 Nice, Carmen, Triple Threat and Scratcher Dubplate Dan among others.  

Whilst Terror’s tune with Sadie and Kano continues to be fought over by underground DJs and major A&Rs everywhere, Aftershock have kept things moving in other areas, setting up subsidiary labels ‘FL’ to deal with the up and coming Biggy D, and a dancehall/reggae label ‘A Level’ which will support releases from Shizzle and 2 Nice among others. As well as all this, Terror has been working on the N.A.S.T.Y. album, an Aftershock compilation and more remixes for a whole heap of labels. But according to Terror, it’s all part of creating the necessary hype… “It’s about doing it yourself and creating your own hype first. If you can’t do that why you gonna go to a major? They gotta look for you, there is no point looking for them. So then when they do come to you, you can say ‘Boy, well I’m eating already, so what you saying? I’ll give you a piece of me but you ain’t owning me’. Then if they try to say ‘forget you’, cool, you’re still eating… For me it’s all about the love, not the money; I’d rather see the scene go under than the majors take it. They don’t know how we live. They can’t take our scene. We created it, we gotta keep it. Have our own industry. We don’t need to check for anyone else.”
